"Chinese artists and Chinese culture have been making great art for more than 5,000 years. Americans know so little about the continuum of Chinese art history, how unbroken it is and how magnificent it is. So this is a way for us to show Virginia and America how magnificent the Chinese creative world has been, for millennia", VMFA director Alex Nyerges said at the opening reception of the exhibition at the Chinese embassy in Washington.

"Currently, the world is experiencing an unprecedented period of opportunity driven by technological development, which can rebuild global financial infrastructures and connections," he said.

"China today is also a major economic power and is open to working with the United States to resolve trade and market access issues, but not through intimidation," he said.

"China's idea of 'building a community with a shared future for mankind' is very fair to mankind and music to our ears," he said.

"Collecting donations was tough," she said.
